289 Cottage, Ocean Beach  [ Photos ]

In a nutshell, 289 Cottage is a comfortable five bedroom, two story, charmingly well-arranged house. Attention is paid to the aesthetic milieu such that it has the relaxed but elegant feel of a bed-and-breakfast by the sea. With this brief description along with the virtual tour of the Photo Gallery, we suspect that you will be left with the sense that this house is indeed a welcome place. In fact, it's a regular summer headquarters of good-cheer & high-spirits. The following section is only a basic mentioning of primary house features. You may wish to quickly glance through it before entering the Photo Gallery:

The house is a located on Cottage Walk in the Incorporated Village of Ocean Beach, just off of Midway. It is about a three minute walk to the commercial quarter of town, and perhaps a four minute walk to the beach. From this locale, neither trip is an unduly lengthy hike. The nice part is that either of these two short jaunts occur amidst the soothing rumble of pounding waves and undulating surf.

Of the five bedrooms, two are upstairs, where one accommodates two twin beds, and the other three. The remaining three bedrooms are downstairs. Two contain two twin beds, and the other has been configured for three. Much effort was placed in the decorative arrangement of these lodging chambers, and so we hope that you will find them to be invitingly appealing.

There are two full bathrooms, one on each floor. An outdoor shower provides a revitalizing experience amidst a natural setting that is not quite matched by either of the two indoor lathering spas.

Common areas of the main floor consist of a fully enclosed and furnished porch, living room, a dining area, and a kitchen with all of the major and small appliances to thoroughly impress any culinary connoisseur. The porch, complete with its own DirecTV/stereo system, functions as an additional sitting area. This vestibulesque Lounge Parlor is especially pleasing; it provides a quiet escape amidst sunny windows and comfortable armchairs. The downstairs hallway, complete with Fire Island related framed reproductions, doubles as congenial standing and mingling area. The house comes fully equipped with air conditioning, two Macintosh computers with DSL connectivity to the internet (call in sick!), DirecTV satellite cable in every room, linens & towels, 25 current periodicals, and an impressively stocked pantry & freezer.

Grounds include two distinct areas: An L-shaped deck is located on the side and rear of the house, and a small garden is situated forward of the Lounge Parlor. This herbal plot contains select Island foliage, providing for a most splendid heap of flora upon which to gaze. Generally speaking, I tend to place a great deal of emphasis on the grounds surrounding the house. I plan to not only maintain, but further improve the landscaping in order that 289 Cottage nobly reflect the sublime essence of the Ocean Beach community.

The players of any given season at 289 Cottage tend to be a group of relaxed, easy going, reasonably cordial professionals, mostly in their 30's and 40's, with a smattering of 50's. Just in case you're the sort who reads opinion journals, likes progressive thinking, engages in witty (and occasionally less-than witty) banter, is at times a touch curmudgeonly, dabbles in blasphemy, embraces free inquiry, drinks ale, appreciates the virtues of sloth, ranks on Republicans, and enjoys an occasional lively debate, then we'll get along fabulously. The fact is though, you actually need not subscribe to all (or even most) of those descriptors. The key thing is that you share our interest in low-key summer fun, and creating a collegial, calm, friendly atmosphere.
